  1. Hi Riana,

Thank you so much for your North Island 2-week itinerary! It has been a tremendous help in building my confidence for planning my trip in March 2025—my first international adventure! I’ve planned something similar, focusing on minimising travel stress by staying longer in each destination to fully experience the areas.

I’ll be traveling with my partner, and here’s what we’ve planned so far:

Auckland: 3 days (including a day trip to Waiheke Island.)
    Whitianga/Coromandel: 3 days
Tauranga/Mount Maunganui: 3 days (with day trips to Hobbiton and Rotorua)
Taupō: 4 days (including an day trip to Tongariro National Park for short walks)
Drive back to Auckland for a 6:00 AM flight

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Especially with Taupo, I am concerned about having 4 days there may be too much? But we are considering day trips around the area, such as Hawkes Bay. I also am a little worried about missing out on the South Island but understand that time is limited, and I want to prioritise a relaxed trip in the North.

    Thanks!
    Madi

    1. Hey Madi, thanks for checking out the post! The itinerary you have planned sounds great, though I hear your concern about Taupo. You may actually need another day for your Tauranga, Mt Maunganui, Hobbiton and Rotorua section, as those each might take a day or more. I think you could see the main highlights of Taupo in just a day, so I wouldn’t spend 4 days there unless you want some more down time or you do have day trips planned for each day. Luckily it’s close to Rotorua, so you could also do a Rotorua day trip from Taupo if you prefer to base there. And it is sad to miss out on the South Island, but I think you’re right in just picking one island if you have <2 weeks. Whatever you choose, I'm sure you're going to have a great time! There will always be way more NZ to discover. Have the best time on your first international adventure!!
