  1. This is a really informative post! We will have to try out the walking tour. Totally agree that they help orient yourself in a city and can even give you some idea of what to check out. Vienna has so much to do; I wish we had had stayed longer than five days! I’m saving this post for our next visit.

    1. Thanks so much, Caitlin! Yes, the walking tour was awesome and I highly recommend it. We can’t wait to go back too!

  2. Thanks so much for your recommendations. This was really helpful. Much appreciated!

    1. Great post Riana! We spent 3 days in Vienna and I still don’t think it was enough! Thanks for sharing, some of the biggest travel lessons I’ve learned have through mistakes as well! I can’t wait to get back to Vienna and go to a few of the places you mentioned 🙂

      1. Thanks so much, Jenny! Funny how mistakes always seem to stand out more. I hope we both enjoy our next trips to Vienna!

  3. I fully support your taste test idea. We did that for sachertorte, apple strudel, and the wurstlstands… the latter out of necessity because we didn’t have dinner reservations either, lol!!

    1. Haha thank you so much! My favourite hobby might be taste testing desserts 😉

Haha that’s the postcard I bought!! I’m really surprised that a lot of things aren’t on in the summer, and it’s good to know about Schonbrunn – I mostly wanted to see the gardens anyway, but assumed you’d have to pay for those too! You are so right about Viennese food, by the way. I was thinking while I was there that it’s funny how many things are specific to Vienna compared to other specific cities – but I didn’t realise just how many specialities they have!

    1. Yes, such a surprise that most of the gardens are free! Highlight of our trip for sure. We’re headed back to Vienna next month and my partner, Colin, is psyched to eat more Viennese food!

  5. Thanks for sharing this! I’m so surprised that things close down in the summer – isn’t that when they’d want to be open to make the most money?
Definitely something I’d like to do in Vienna is eat all the baked goods! I’m not surprised the tart was dry though. Some things are way overhyped.

    1. Yeah, we assumed things would be open too, but I guess that’s just not the season. Would be interesting if they extended their season as I’m sure they’d have no problem selling tickets to anything. If/when we do go back, I would like to try the sachertorte from one of the original bakeries – just to see if it’s any better!

  6. Love this post. We really enjoyed Vienna in the summer but think you’re right, it was busy especially at the Palace. Great idea to go back in a different season. You have us thinking 🤔😆 Relieved to hear about the palace as we didn’t go in but really enjoyed the grounds

    1. Thanks so much, Ross! You definitely did Schonbrunn right if you skipped the inside. Yes, I’d love to try Vienna again in the fall/spring. We did go back for the Christmas Markets in December and, of course, it was packed again.

We went to Vienna for two days this spring. Too short. We didn’t have time to visit everything. But we also love the gardens of the Schönbrunn Palace. I’m not too fond of planning and booking tours in advance when I travel, but I think it’s essential for short stays. It’s so frustrating otherwise when you can’t do what you would like to. We did eat delicious apple strudels as well.

    1. Yes, two days can be tough to see it all. Glad your strudels were good and hope you get to go back and experience more of Vienna!

  8. Sounds like a good trip where you learnt a lit and now have an excuse to visit another time!

I visited Vienna years ago in a serious student budget. I remember arriving on train in the early hours of the morning with no hostel reservation, waiting for MacDonalds to open st 6am so we could use their wifi!

A beautiful city with a rich history and culture. We did treat ourselves to a musical performance – a magical experience!

    1. Yes, we’ve been twice (this visit and again for Christmas Markets) and both times were not ideal. I think I will give Vienna a try again in the future – preferably shoulder season and with a few more days to explore the place.

Ha and I’ve definitely done the McDonalds wifi trick a time or two!

My husband and I were married in Vienna . We lived there two years and after the first year we felt like we belonged
We had an apartment near the city hall where everything was accessible by tram or bus . We were able to travel to other countries and have great memories of this beautiful city

    1. What an awesome experience! I’m so glad you enjoyed living there and have such great memories!

  10. Being Austrian myself, I can recommend skipping the Sachertorte at the Hotel Sacher, it’s supposed to be the original recipe but it’s rather dry and dense. Order it in one of the other Cafés, it will be better. And yes, get a side order of whipped cream to go with it.
As far as museums go, they’re good but not really different from those in other cities. I prefer to walk around the city center, looking at the unique shops. Also, many courtyards and passages are open to the public.
For food, try the Palatschinkenkuchl (my favorite) or one of the cellar restaurants (Esterhazykeller, Zwölf Apostelkeller, Melker Stiftskeller, to name just a few). Check the opening hours on the web before actually going there, and a reservation is probably a good idea.
To walk your dog, go to the Stadtpark or on the promenade along the Danube. Enjoy your next trip to Vienna!
