To be honest, I’m still struggling with the idea of not feeling guilty about the life you want to live. So here are some tips for living your life, the life you choose, guilt-free (that I also need to hear myself sometimes).
Give yourself permission to dream BIG
The first step to really living that big dream and the life you want to live is to give yourself permission to dream big. Put alway all of your own doubts and fears. And definitely put away all of society’s expectations or restrictions you feel from your friends and family. What’s the wildest and craziest thing that comes to mind? Let it come to mind. Lose yourself in that perfect life you want to live. No dream is too ridiculous, too unrealistic or too big.
You are the one who has to face yourself every day
Many of us hold back from living out our big dreams because we’re scared. What will people think? My mom is going to hate this. What about my friends? But at the end of the day, the only person who has to live your life is you. You have to wake up every single day and face yourself in the mirror. Not your mom, or your best friend, or that one girl you kind of know on Facebook. Just you.
Listen to that little voice inside of you
You know the voice. It’s that little one in the very back of your mind that’s quietly pushing against the life you’re “supposed” to live. It’s the voice encouraging you to live the life you want to live instead. Listen to that voice. It’s there for a reason. That voice is your heart pushing against any excuses your brain might be thinking up. If you ignore it, it’s only going to get louder.
Dreaming big isn’t selfish, silly or irresponsible
Dreaming big is actually really brave. Putting a plan in place for the life you want to live is smart. Daring to break away from the norm is courageous and admirable. I feel a lot of guilt whenever I start planning my big life of travel and adventure because I think I’m being selfish, silly and irresponsible. But living my life the way I want to isn’t selfish. And just because it doesn’t look like the typical adult life I know, doesn’t make it silly or irresponsible.
Your people will come around, eventually…
Introducing your big dreams and life plans to the people in your life can be really scary. They’re going to have questions, doubts, concerns, warnings and judgments. They might not understand it. They might disapprove. But at the end of the day, the people who really love you, who care about you, and who actually matter? They are going to keep loving, caring and supporting you and your decision. It might take them some time, but the right people will come around eventually.
Don’t stop
Whatever you do, don’t stop. Don’t stop dreaming big. Don’t stop planning out your future. And don’t stop living the life you want to live. It might feel terrifying to take that leap – to make the plans, announce them to your people, and take action on them. But do you know what is even more terrifying? Not doing any of that. It’s so much scarier to stay stuck in a life you don’t want to be living for years and years instead of trying out that life you want to live – the life you’re meant to be living.
What’s your big dream?
